Chapter 1:

Stormkit raced after her denmates growling playfully. Snakekit hid behind a rock, his tail peeking out from behind it. Stormkit pounced on his tail, earning a squeak of surprise.

"Got you!"

"That's not fair," Snakekit whined.

“Yes it is! Now, you’re the cat and we’re the mice!” said Stormkit.

“Yes it is! Now, you’re the cat and we’re the mice!” said Stormkit.

Stormkit sprinted towards the medicine cat den and ran inside. Palefern was sorting her herbs near the back of the den.

“Palefern! Snakekit’s trying to find me, can you hide me?”

“Of course little one,” Palefern chuckled, “Hide under the crevice, yes. Right there. I’ll cover you up with some daisy petals."

Stormkit giggled as the petals tickled her nose. She heard the other kits running around and play fighting with each other.

A sound of pawsteps came from the entrance to the medicine cat den. Stormkit peeked through her hiding spot and saw her mother. I’m in trouble now.

“Sorry to bother you Palefern, but Stormkit is missing. The other kits were trying to find her and couldn’t, so they came to me. Is she hiding in here?” Bramblestream asked.

Stormkit crawled out of her hiding spot meekly. Her tail and head were down as her mother licked her head.

“Stormkit! You can’t be in here, this is Palefern’s working space. Not a play area,” Bramblestream mewed sternly.

“I’m sorry Bramblestream,” Stormkit replied.

“Go to the nursery, I have a meeting with Mudstar and Tallwing.”

Stormkit raced off to the nursery as her mother padded towards the leader’s den. Her parents were some of the most important cats in Shadowclan. Her mother was going to become deputy to Mudstar, but she had become pregnant with kits.

Mudstar still asked Stormkit’s parents questions from time to time seeing as they were both more experienced than both him and Tallwing. It was also a distraction for them to not dwell on the death of their son Flurrykit.

Ever since she had opened her eyes, Stormkit had been lonely. Her parents had often neglected her because they didn’t want to be reminded of Flurrykit. Stormkit’s only friends had been her denmates Snakekit and Lizardkit. But they were almost to the age of apprenticeship, so they would be moving out of the nursery soon.

Stormkit pricked her ears as she looked behind her. The hunting patrol had returned, and the leader soon scurried off to join Bramblestream. The leader of the patrol was of course Stormkit’s father.

Stormkit saw Duckfire drop a mouse on top of the fresh kill pile. She scurried over and picked up the mouse in her jaws. Deciding that she wanted to share with the elders, she padded over to the far side of camp.

“Stormkit? Is that you?” the head of Ashstripe leaned close to Stormkit.

“Yes, and I brought a mouse!”

“That sounds wonderful dear,” said Cedardusk with a swipe of his tongue.

Stormkit padded over in between the two elders and sat down. Ashstripe swished her long fluffy tail around Stormkit’s body.

“Would you like to hear a story while you and Cedardusk share that mouse?” she asked kindly.

“Yes please!” replied Stormkit as she took her first bite of the mouse.

“Okay. Well, a long time ago, there was a cat called Blackstar. Now Blackstar was one of the greatest leaders Shadowclan has ever seen! He was brave, noble, kind and wise. But Blackstar had to confront one of the greatest obstacles the clans have ever face.

The clans’ old home was being destroyed by twolegs. So, Starclan sent a message to a cat from each clan and sent them to find a new home for the clans. They sent a message to Brambleclaw of Thunderclan, Feathertail of Riverclan, Crowpaw of Windclan and Tawnypelt of Shadowclan.

Once they had figured out where to go, they came back home. They each told their leaders of what they had discovered and that they needed to leave their old home behind. The clans traveled together to this new and better home.

Blackstar was the leader of Shadowclan at the time of the Great Journey. The other clan leaders had a very hard time convincing him to leave their home.

But, one day twoleg monsters attacked the camp! Their sharp teeth and large jaws devoured trees. They could easily crush the strongest warrior. Blackstar got all of his clanmates out of camp, or so he thought.

Blackstar turned to look, and one of his apprentices was stuck! He was trapped under a thicket, and a monster was about to crush him. But Blackstar grabbed the apprentice’s scruff and threw him away from the monster. Then, he heard a wailing sound. It turns out that the queens had missed a kit.

He ran back to camp, avoiding the loud monsters on the way. When he finally reached camp, he saw the young and frightened kit about to be eaten by a monster. Blackstar grabbed the kit in his mighty jaws and fled the camp.

Because of Blackstar’s bravery, two cats were saved that day. Blackstar will forever be known as one of the greatest leaders Shadowclan has ever seen,” Ashstripe concluded.

“Woah! That is so cool!” Stormkit exclaimed.

“May I finish the rest of this tasty mouse, Stormkit?” Cedardusk mewed.

“Of course, I’m going to go back to the nursery,” she responded.

Stormkit padded out of the elder’s den, her tail held high. She saw that her parents were still sitting with Mudstar and Tallwing. I’ll just hide behind those rocks and wait for them to be done. She thought.

Stormkit hid between two boulders and waited for her parents to be done.

“Are you sure that it’s the best option?” Stormkit heard Mudstar ask.

“Of course we do. She reminds us too much of Flurrykit,” Crowripple replied sternly.

“It’s a bit cruel, don’t you think?” Tallwing asked.

“Yes, but we have to do it. Which border do you think, Thunderclan or Riverclan?” Bramblestream said.

They’re, they’re giving me up! Stormkit wailed inwardly, I can’t believe it!

Stormkit ran away from the four cats crying. She ran into the nursery and bounded into her nest. The tiny kit wailed into her bedding, not caring if the whole of the clans heard her.

“Stormkit? Are you okay?” Snakekit asked.

“I’m fine,” she snuffled, “I just want to be left alone.”

Oh Starclan why? Why me?
